How to Make Bottle Cap Earrings

There's nothing like a pair of novelty earrings. They can be changed from day to day, according to your color-coordinated outfit, or just because it's fun to have others compliment you on your 'different' earrings. Bottle caps can make great conversation starters as earrings, whether they are made from beer bottles or soda bottles. Here's how to turn those saved caps into an accessory.

Steps

  1. 1
Start collecting bottle caps. When you get two of the same kind, you can start making your first pair. If they are a bit bashed up, mold them into shape with a hammer. Make a small hole in the top center of each cap with the tip of a small knife or nail.
  2. 2
If you have a small hole or nail punch, you can place the cap on a piece of soft scrap wood and tap through the cap using the punch and a hammer. Alternatively, you can use a small drill bit and an electric drill to make a hole. Open the two jump rings with the help of pliers, twisting the two ends sideways away from each other.

Slip the jump rings through the holes that you made in the caps.
  4.

Cut two short lengths of chain.

Slip chains onto the jump rings.
  6.

Attach another jump ring to the top of each chain and add an earring hook.

Close the hoop and put them on.

    Tips
  • Make them different! You could also sell them and make some money.
  • If you've never done jewelry before, there's a trick you should know about opening and closing jump rings. Twisting the ends apart from each other sideways works much better than pulling them directly apart. It's easier, closes nice and snug, and keeps the circular shape of the ring.
  • Mix them up.
  • Ask family and friends to save bottle caps for you.
  • Rinse the caps, dry them well, and save them in a plastic bag, or a box.
  • If one is unrepairable, do not worry. You can mix and match them. Each ear can wear a different cap.
